Any shops that sell African food, 'Food from the Motherland'. If one appears on your High Street it is a clear a sign that the place has turned/is turning into a crap hole.

Do you live there?

Maybe I was a little harsh...the cinema is nice as is that local history museum with all the ancient radios.

The pier confused me though...they couldn't be bothered to take it out to sea so it ends just a few yards from the shore.

Weird

HMO's are better to be filled with "easter yuropeyan" workers than with thieving low-life British born skag heads.
At least the "bozos" pay their way and dont rob their neighbours.

Ah, Cowdenbeath? The magic of the name, and the football team. Didn't there used to be mines in Cowdenbeath, and I heard it had the last communist councillor in Britain. What you doing in Cowdenbeath then, young Leonard? Not down a pit?

Re: What makes a town a"shithole"?
Local councils LOVE HMOs.

Take one run down, rat infested blot on the landscape and turn it into 5/6 sources of council tax.

Investors love them too. Take one rundown property and a bunch of eastern European workers. Get back the cost of buying and converting it within 5/6 years at local housing benefit rates.

Years ago they were really lively and wealthy, but over the years they just fell apart. Lots of enormous ornate Victorian/Georgian town houses been converted into HMOs full of smackheads etc and boarded up shops. Majority of seaside resorts have at least some of this as you're prob well aware with Brighton. Really quite sad to see tbh.
